Welcome to the String of Horses; a traditional Coaching Inn set in one of the most beautiful and historic areas of Britain; near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall; The Lake District and the Scottish Borders.
Though acclaimed for its yesteryear ambience; The String of Horses looks after its guests in 21st Century Style. With its oak beams and panelling; open fires and gleaming brassware; it's no wonder the String of Horses has provided a warm welcome to so many visitors from all over the world for more than 350 years.
Below you can learn a little of the history of this traditional Cumbrian inn.
1659 was perhaps not a particularly good time to establish an inn - with Cromwell but recently dead and his son Richard installed as Lord Protector. Wracked by Civil War and religious conflict; England was neither united nor a kingdom. Even so; merchants still traded; commerce still persisted and people still travelled; stopping off to rest at rural taverns where the ale would refresh; the fayre satisfy; the beds soothe - and a new string of horses could be harnessed to the long-distance stagecoach. Thus was born The String of Horses Inn; a haven for travellers then; and still the same all these centuries later: a place where the ambience of yesteryear combines with the very best of today.

Whether you're walking Hadrian's Wall or just looking for a good bed and breakfast, b&b or pub/restaurant in our part of Cumbria, you can be assured of a warm welcome at The Centurion Inn.Situated at the south-western edge of the village, with unbroken views across the Irthing Valley to Cold Fell, the highest peak in the northern Pennines, is the family run Centurion Inn, or, colloquially, ?Watton Pub?!The inn has served the area since the late 18th century and remains at the very core of village life, playing host to the Post Office as well as to local darts and dominoes teams, etc. It was known as The Black Bull as recently as 1974 when it was discovered that part of the building stood on the actual route of Hadrian's Wall. A Roman connection beckoned and The Centurion came into being. Sympathetically modernised over the years the building still maintains the look and feel of a centuries-old inn.
