Situated in the village of Tirril, offering real Ales, excellent food and a warm welcome is the epitome of an English Country Inn. Dating from 1917 it has a wealth of beams, brasses and memorabilia, as well as four open fireplaces, the largest of which still has in place its original hooks for smoking meats. Formerly known as The Board, the Inn was re-named the Queens Head by its enterprising owner, just in time for Queen Victoria's coronation. It was the same man, John Bewsher who bought the pub from the Wordsworths in 1836, after it had been in the family for over 20 years. The final sale document known as the β€œWordsworth Indentureβ€, is still on display in the bar. As with quality Inns throughout the ages the Queens Head today produces home cooked food to the highest standard, being one of only three pubs in Cumbria to be recommended in the β€œWhichβ€ Good Food Guide, making use of local produce. The Inn has 2 comfortable bars, a 60 seater A'La Carte Restaurant, and a more relaxed informal bar menu available. Opening in March a shop attached to the Inn, making available local products from Cumbria.

We are open 7 days a week all year round for food, drink & accommodation. Many of our guests stay on our popular mini-breaks because of the superb quality and value for money of our award wining food, appreciated by visitors and locals alike. Each suite can also be combined with a superior room upstairs to form a spacious apartment, ideal for families and small groups. PLEASE NOTE: We are a 4-Star Inn - this is different to a 4-Star Hotel (the new UK grading system for serviced accommadation can be a bit confusing at first sight if you're not used to it) . You'll not find full-on 4-Star Hotel facilities at the Brackenrigg - what we offer you is more like a 2 or 3-star hotel - but with all the added charm & friendliness that comes from being a cosy & characterful Inn...!All of our bedrooms are en-suite - some with shower only and others with bath & shower. We have excellent wheelchair access to our public areas: bar, lounge and dining room. 3 of our rooms are dog-friendly and, of course, we also welcome guide dogs. Several of our rooms are ideal for families, too.We can offer activity options, a secure cycle shed and a wealth of local knowledge to guests as well as very flexible conference facilities to small business groups. Our excellent, well-chosen range of wines and local beers complement the menus perfectly and our bar, with its local character and open fire is there for you to relax in even more. What makes us a really special place to stay, however, is our food. Locally-sourced food and a superb selection of fish dishes feature very strongly in our carefully chosen menus and it's all cooked to order on the premises by our own chefs. Many of our guests return time after time - why not discover the Brackenrigg for yourself and find out why?
