A traditional Suffolk coastal inn, at the heart of the village of Dunwich, an ideal place to base yourselves whilst exploring the beautiful Suffolk heritage coastline and countryside. Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship isnt just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all. We like to think its also a part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village, surrounded by nature reserves, heath land and shingle beach, only the romantic ruins of the Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port that was claimed by the sea during a terrible storm. Legend has it that you can still here the peal of the church bells from beneath waves. Whilst we can not guarantee that, we can certainly promise the more earthly things that we are happy to provide: real food, real ales and real fires. Traditionally furnished rooms, many with views across the open marshes looking out to Southwold and a huge garden dotted with fruit trees including our 300 year old fig tree. Miles of beach are just a few paces from the front door of The Ship Inn.
