Attractions
Cheltenham began its transformation into Cheltenham Spa in 1738, with the discovery of Old Well (the famous Cheltenham Ladies College now occupies the site) In 1788 King George III came to take the waters, and soon Cheltenham was Britain's most important spa.
The most eminent architects of the day created a new town of stately squares, sweeping terraces and broad avenues. The salty alkaline waters can still be tasted at the beautiful Pitville Pump Room. In the heart of the town lies the Promenade, lined with elegant shops, statues, trees and flower beds. It encapsulates the genteel image and complements the superb 18th century architecture of Britain's most complete Regency town.
Although the fine architecture, gardens, flower displays and museums are an essential ingredient of the town, time has not stood still in Cheltenham and there are many other attractions.
The wide variety of quality shops makes Cheltenham a popular destination for shoppers. There are numerous festivals (see below), good theatres and excellent nightlife to be found in the restaurants, bars and night-clubs. The Abbey Hotel is ideally situated to allow guests to enjoy all this. Chelteham town centre is not large, and all of these features and attractions are within comfortable walking distance of the hotel.
Cheltenham is an excellent base for exploring the Cotswold Hills, one of the most beautiful areas in England. Mazy country lanes are perfect for wandering, and the beauty of its towns and villages built of mellow golden stone are famous.
Tours by car, cycle or on foot are all highly rewarding. In particular, the two Romantic Road touring routes start and finish in Cheltenham, and are ideal for discovering the Cotswolds by car.
