Description
Squirrel Lane Cottage is a charming 18th century Scottish town house that has been occupied since around 1789. It is one of Dunfermline's oldest buildings. It is situated in the heart of the historic district of the town and convenient to all amenities.

The ancient Abbey wall is just a few feet away and the cottage where Andrew Carnegie was born is across the street.

An entrance to the towns famous Pittencrief Park is found next to Squirrel Lane Cottage so you can enjoy a walk in a lovely country setting, finding peacocks, wood pigeons and of course squirrels.

Squirrel Lane Cottage has many of its original features, arched doorways, ornate cornices and fireplaces. The walls of the cottage are about two feet thick, keeping it cool in the summer and cosy in the winter. The house has been lovingly restored to keep a period theme throughout.

Rooms: We offer two rooms in our cottage, a large twin bedded / sitting room which has an original Victorian fireplace, just what's needed for a cosy evening. It has a window with a view that looks over the River Forth and the famous Forth railway bridge. The room has a private Bathroom.

A smaller double room with a view of the intimate garden. This room also has a Victorian fireplace.

Hairdryers are supplied in each room, as are phone connections and internet capability. You will receive a Complimentary tray in the rooms.

We operate a Strict non-smoking policy in our cottage.

Food: We serve a full Scottish or continental breakfast. Brenda offers a delightful choice of the freshest ingredients, highlighting Scottish produce.

More about your Hosts: Mrs. Brenda Kucharzewski is an accredited Scottish genealogist, so if Family History is your interest, Brenda has many records available for you to view.

The first Carnegie library is also nearby. This library has a very good local history department and Brenda is familiar with the Scottish Record Office and can organise a tour of these facilities.

Brenda's husband Bob is a keen golfer and can offer help in organising a game or two on some of the best courses in Scotland.

Dunfermline Abbey, founded by Malcolm Canmores, is a short stroll from the cottage. Here many of Scotland's Kings and Queens are buried including Robert the Bruce. The Abbey services under the Church of Scotland every Sunday.

The centre of the towns shopping district is within easy walking distance and their are many restaurants to choose from.

The railway station is also within easy walking distance and trains will take you to Edinburgh in only 25 minutes. Edinburgh airport is only 30 minutes by car or taxi. and Glasgow is less than one hour away.

The ferry link at Rosyth is 15 minutes from the cottage, connecting you with Europe through the port of Zebrugge, Belgium.
Attractions
The historic town of Dunfermline boasts a number of sites and other attractions. Dunfermline boasts fine cuisine and can cater for almost any palet. It also has a number of night clubs and public houses for those with dancing on there minds.

Scotlands capital, Edinburgh is 30 minutes away by car and an adequate bus and train service can take you there with ease. Glasgow, 40 minutes to the west, is also worth a visit.

Historic Sites
Dunfermline Abbey and Palace
The Abbey, whose foundation goes back to 1072, was built by King David I of Scotland in honour of his mother, Queen Margaret. The tomb of King Robert the Bruce attracts a large number of visitors to the abbey each year.16 kings and queens of Scotland buried inside including Queen Margaret. This was also the birthplace of Charles I, the last monarch born in Scotland.

Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum
Born in 1835, Andrew Carnegie became a millionaire benefactor after emigration to the United States. This museum is housed in the original home and paints a picture of humble beginings.

House of the Binns
An Edinburgh butter merchant, Thomas Dalyell, who had made his fortune at the court of King James VI and I in London, built the House of the Binns between 1612 and 1630. It has been the home of the Dalyell family ever since.

Queensferry Museum
Just over the bridge, the museum contains many items relating to aspects of life and leisure in Queensferry, the development of the burgh, the Burry man, the Queensferry passage, and the building of the road and rail bridges.

Culross Palace
The old buildings and cobbled streets create a time warp for visitors as they explore the old town. Enjoy the refurbished Palace that dates from 1597 with its medieval garden.

Other Attractions:-
Golf must be one of the most famous of Scotlands exports with the home of golf only 20 miles away and a number of quality courses within a few miles. If you are planning to stay for a few days, remember to bring your clubs and we'll arrange something to suit.
Connecting Fife to Edinburgh and the south are two famous bridges.
