Attractions
Exmoor is a land of incomparable beauty - heather topped hills, bracken covered sweeping combes, spectacular cliffs, tumbling waterfalls and rivers in deeply wooded valleys. The magnificent scenery and quiet charm of the countryside, prompted the Victorians to name the area the "Little Switzerland of England".
Lynton is a bright airy Victorian village with a selection of shops, tea rooms and cafes. It is connected to its sister resort of Lynmouth by a unique water operated cliff railway dating back to 1890. Nestling beneath the cliffs, the pretty harbour of Lynmouth is a romantic escape from modern day living with its now of fishing cottages tumbling down the street towards the quay and the distinctive Rhenish Tower.
Not far from Lynton, hidden from view is a spectacular Valley of Rocks, an extraordinary area of strangely weathered rock formations where wild goats scramble amongst the rocks and scuttle precariously along the coastal footpath, perhaps admiring the dramatic views out to sea. Several enchanting bays lead westward from the Valley of Rocks offering sandy retreats for weary walkers along the coastal paths.
Offering a complete contrast, the steep sided wooded valley of the East Lyn river follows the course of the water to Watersmeet where a Victorian fishing lodge is now a National Trust run tea shop. Dramatic waterfalls and spectacular autumn and spring colours provide a constantly changing view. Inland locations offer numerous walking opportunities amidst the dramatic scenery - Exmoor National Park has over 600 miles of marked footpaths. For the less energetic, pony trekking gives the rider an elevated view of the countryside. Wildlife abounds throughout the area - red deer, ponies and sheep gaze freely, watched over by falcons, buzzards and even the rare merlin
