The History Of the George Hotel: The George Hotel is the oldest Inn in Bishops Stortford and the third oldest in Hertfordshire.Standing at the junction of North Street and Windhill, the George Hotel is first mentioned in 1417 but was probably built towards the end of the 14th Century. During the 15th century it was the court of Piggotts Manor. Charles 1st dined at the George in 1629 and from the late 18th to the early 19th Century it served as the Excise Office for Bishops Stortford. The Inn itself is over 500 years old! We have a very small car park at the side of the Hotel. If this is full, go up Windhill and take the first right at the police station where a public car park is available. There are many public car parks in town. The comfortable lounge bar, full of character is ideal for a drink or satisfying meal from our extensive blackboard menu. We are open every lunchtime and most evenings.
