St Georges dates back as far as 1222, but only became a public holiday and national day of feast in 1415.

Traditionally people wear roses on their chest as this particular flower was reported to have grown on his grave. St George is also the patron saint of Catalonia where roses are also used as part of the tradition. Catalonian women would give men a book and in return the men gave women a rose.

The day is celebrated by many nations outside of the UK as well including Majorca, Catalonia, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro, Genoa and Beirut plus others.

Most people mark this day by flying an English flag
