" To walk through Old Portsmouth today, with its cobbled streets, charming pubs and restaurants is a walk through maritime history. Narrow side streets and old fortifications recall a medievil community huddled together within town walls. Much still remains to entrigue. For over 800 years every English monarch, with the exception of Mary Tudor passed down the ancient High Street. It was in these streets that pressgangs roamed seeking new recruits for the Navy, and where sailors took their ease, as sailors will!
Standing proudly at corner of Broad Street and the High Street, the Square Tower was the official residence of the towns military governor.
Portsmouths first harbour, the Camber is still a bustling workaday dock shared by ferries and cargo vessels.
In 1585 the first potatoes and tobbaco seen in England were landed here, following Sir Walter Raleighs expedition to Virginia.
For 500 years the Square and Round Towers have guarded the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour. They have become traditional points for farewells as warships and merchantmen ease through the narrow harbour entrance.
Within strolling distance, many of the cities major sites, including the city centre, naval dockyard with its historic ships, HMS Victory, Mary Rose and Warrior. Also close by are the D Day Museum, Royal Marines Museum, City Museum, Square Tower and Round Tower, Camber Docks, Sealife Centre and Southsea.
On the quay opposite Fortitude Cottage, the water bus runs from Easter to November. A five minute ride takes one to the centre of the Naval Dockyard or hop on or off at your pleasure and tour the entire harbour. "
