Description

Originally built as a farmstead in 1747, this stone-built Pub and restaurant features a wood burning stove, sunny walled garden, large dining conservatory, excellent bar meals and a la carte menus (including vegetarian) using fresh, local produce, good choice of wines, 5 cask ales.

Battlesteads has quickly gained a reputation for its character and warm welcome as a friendly, family run hotel and restaurant in historic north Tynedale.

Situated in the quiet village of Wark, 12 miles north of Hexham, Battlesteads has 17 en-suite bedrooms, including ground floor rooms with disabled access, and is ideally placed for exploring Hadrian’s Wall, Kielder and Border Reiver country, whether by car, cycle or on foot.

Bedrooms have been carefully modernised to provide comfortable accommodation, all rooms are en-suite and have colour television with freeview, ironing boards and hairdryer. Four ground floor rooms are specifically for visitors with disabilities and close to parking spaces.

The restaurant offers a wide range of meals and snacks freshly prepared in our own kitchens. Our chefs source the best of local ingredients to ensure freshness and flavour - Cumbrian Lamb, Northumbrian Beef, salad s from our own garden. Fish and seafood is sourced from North Shields Fish Quay. Desserts are freshly made by Dee Slade, who is an award-winning dessert chef. Vegetarian choices are always available.

Attractions

There are many picturesque walks around Wark village and salmon and trout fishing can be arranged on the River North Tyne by prior notice.

Bellingham (pronounced Bell-ing-jum), a village on the North Tyne, four miles north of Wark is regarded as the modern capital of North Tynedale. It is situated right at the heart of what was once part of Northumberlands Border Reiving country. The nearby Hesleyside Hall was the home to one famous Border Reiving clan, the Charltons who derived their name from the hamlet of Charlton, to the west of Bellingham. In the uppermost reaches of the River North Tyne, to the east of Bellingham, is the huge dam of Kielder Water, the largest man-made lake in Europe. Kielder stretches along the North Tyne Valley for about seven miles, has 27 miles of shoreline and a surface area of 2684 acres. It features many outdoor sporting activities including shooting, fishing, riding, boating, windsurfing, walking and much more.
