Description

Discover 1066 country

An Ideal base for exploring 1066 country Cleavers Lyng is a privately owned grade II listed Country Guesthouse of considerable character and charm, with a history dating back to 1577. The original part of the house was built during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I to which the oak beams and inglenook fireplace in the breakfast area bear witness. To be found on a quite country lane with little passing traffic, just before the Norman All Saints Church of Herstmonceux, one can also take beautiful long walks over the 500 acres of Herstmonceux Castle Estate or the hundreds of acres of Pevensey Marshes both just a short stroll from Cleavers Lyng.

Set amidst elegant gardens ablaze with colour during the spring and summer months, Cleavers Lyng offers glorious views across unspoilt Sussex countryside. Our one and half acres of landscaped gardens have a wealth of birds and wildlife and are secluded and very peaceful. We have plenty of off road private parking. All of our bedrooms have double beds and modern en-suite facilities, along with hospitality tray, flat panel colour TV and DVD player and free WIFI connection.

For those that just like to relax and unwind away from the urban clamour we have plenty of comfortable seating in our downstairs lounge area. Games and cards are also available. Herstmonceux Village is situated on the A271, which is 1.5 miles distant, and has a bistro, an Indian and French Restaurant, two pubs and a number of shops. Further a field the cosmopolitan town of Eastbourne with its modern Marina or its older town with its Victorian pier and promenade and numerous shops, varied eating-places and quaint Theatres are some 20 mins drive. The City of Brighton is now only 35 mins with the new bypass for those wanting to shop till they drop or explore the lanes and The famous Royal Brighton Pavilion.

Cleaves Lyng is adjacent to the West gate of historic Herstmonceux Castle and gardens an only a few miles from Battle Abbey, scene of King Harold's famous defeat by the Normans. The Castle of Pevensey, Lewes and Hastings are also close by, as is Bateman's home of Rudyard Kipling. Charleston Farm House home of the Bloomsbury set, the group of artists, writers and intellectuals that included Virginia Woolf, and the beautiful Tudor moated Michelham Priory are just a few of the very many interesting places to visit. .
