Historically, Amersham was a centre for the 'Lollards'. These were Christians who wished to read the Bible in English as translated by John Wycliffe (as opposed to the obscurity of Latin), and were burnt at the stake for doing so during the years 1506 to 1522. 2011 marks the 80th anniversary of the unveiling of a special memorial to them in the corner of a field above Old Amersham.
