Converted from an old Welsh farm into a splendid homely guest accommodation , Penbontbren is a rare gem tucked away in the beautiful rural countryside of West Wales. Meaning "above the wooden bridge", Penbontbren is the ideal place to experience a break with a truly Welsh flavour.
The original farm-to-hotel conversion was also subject to an award for its attention to detail with customers' comfort in mind. All rooms are "en-suite" and combine those little extras that make any stay more comfortable.
Penbontbren is beaming with character and you could sleep in what was originally the stable, the thrashing barn, the mill or even the granary. Each room has been carefully converted to maintain the traditional character of the original farm.
Fishing -
Penbontbren is very close to great fishing opportunities, there are plenty of award-winning beaches nearby where anglers are spoilt for choice. Our waters are famed for sea trout, salmon and brown trout. There are also a trout farms as well as plenty of river fishing for example:
* Nine Oaks Fishery has 6 lakes, 3 coarse and 3 trout and is in a picturesque setting; here you can catch rainbow trout, roach, tench, bream, grass carp, cat fish and others.
* Rhydlewis Trout Fishery is smaller but also set among stunning scenery for you to practise your fly fishing.
Marine Life -
We have one of only two resident schools of bottle nosed dolphins in the UK dwelling in Cardigan Bay year round, inspiring a Dolphin Watch Project staffed by volunteers, so plenty of opportunity for dolphin watching. You may also spot grey seals on the rocks or in the sea at one of the beaches close to the hotel. Harbour porpoises feeding on mackerel or herring are also often seen singly or in small groups here.
Bird Watching -
This area is full of wildlife and birds of prey fly happily round the neighbourhood, we regularly spot Red Kites, Goshawks and Peregrine falcons and for those in the know there are nesting colonies of Choughs. We are close to many scenic magical wild places were unusual birds are often spotted. There are even rumours of an eagle having been spotted around here?
Walking & Cycling -
We are close to the Ceredigion Coastal Path, and the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path: so there are coastal, cliff walking as well as vast areas of mountain and moor land - and many beautiful wooded valleys to explore.
There is a 3km cycle route through the beautiful Aeron Valley linking the coastal town of Aberaeron with the National Trust property at Llanerchaeron.
There are numerous other cycle routes where the climbs from sea level are rewarded by fabulous views along the coast. Penbontbren makes an ideal evening rest point for the guest that wishes to explore the area on foot or by cycle during the day and enjoy comfort and fine cuisine in the evening.
