Description

In a complete retreat from today's thundering motorways and stress-filled working hours, the Red Lion Hotel at Clovelly reminds us all of what used to be the unhurried, natural pace of life. To wake up to the sights and sounds of the ancient, unspoilt harbour is a unique and delightful experience.

The Red Lion has 11 bedrooms with sea or harbour views and the recently restored graded building adjacent to the Red Lion, known as the Sail Loft, provides an additional 6 comfortably and wonderfully stylish bedrooms all with sea views. Lying in bed you will hear the cries of wheeling seagulls and the sound of the sea playing in and out of the stony beach below your room.

One of the Red Lion premium rooms has its own balcony and twin aspect views, so you can gaze across the bay to the distant Saunton Sands or watch the boats come and go in the harbour. The other Red Lion premium room has a king-sized double bed and a bay window, with the same special view.

But all the other rooms, including those of the Sail Loft, enjoy sea views. Beautifully decorated on a whimsical nautical theme, the magic touch of a talented interior designer is to be seen everywhere.

Parking is at the beach car park.

The Red Lion was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in 2012 by Trip Advisor. The award is given to properties that consistently receive excellent ratings from their customers.

Attractions

Clovelly is probably the most photographed village in Devon and is a fantastically picturesque, historic, fishing village clinging to the sides of a cleft in the 400' cliff above the C14th working port.

The village has its own visitor centre and car park at the top and it is possible to take the Land Rover service down to the harbour and back. The cobbled village streets are traffic-free. The famous Clovelly donkeys traditionally carry goods up the hill while sledges bring them down.

Bideford is a pleasant town to visit, the town is centred on the river Torridge, with some nice pubs and restaurants. It is a good base for exploring the region.

The Big Sheep - North Devons all-weather attraction

The Milky Way - The Milky Way theme park has something for all the family

The Gnome reserve and flower garden, nr Bradworthy 08708 459 012

Lundy Island, 10 miles off the coast lies the nature reserve island of Lundy. The island can be reached on the MV Oldenburg, day trips and longer stays are available

Appledore

An attractive fishing town situated right on the Estuary of the rivers Torridge and Tor. It is a town steeped in history, growing up as a fishing village, the tiny streets and cottages dating back hundreds of years are still well preserved, although many of the old stores in market street have closed as people tend to shop in the Supermarkets in Bideford.

Many of the older cottages are now holiday lets, and the town is heavily dependant on the seasonal holiday trade. Despite this, Appledore is still worth a visit out of the busy season.
