York is a walled City founded by the Romans in 71 AD under the name Eboracum, but it is believed that there were Mesolithic settlements as far back as 8000-7000AD. York University is a very popular University which is on the south east side of the City.

In the Middle Ages York grew as a major wool trading centre and also became the capital of the northern ecclesiastical province of the Church of England, which it still retains.
