York is a walled City founded by the Romans in 71 AD under the name Eboracum, but it is believed that there were Mesolithic settlements as far back as 8000-7000AD. York University is a very popular University which is on the south east side of the City.



In the Middle Ages York grew as a major wool trading centre and also became the capital of the northern ecclesiastical province of the Church of England, which it still retains. In the 19th Century it became a hub for the railway network, and a lot of people still do arrive by train into York Train Station



York is also famous for York Minster which is a popular tourist destination dating back to around 1080.
